WOOD CHIPS

WOOD CHIPS

An economical way to heat your home.
It is possible with ALTERECO!

Our idea for economical home heating is wood chips.

In our ALTERECO ECO-QUENTIN biomass boiler solution, we use deciduous wood chips as the basic fuel, because this type of biomass has a high calorific value of 16 kJ / kg while maintaining a competitive price compared to e.g. pellets.

Thanks to this solution, we obtain much lower operating costs, which in the long run translates into significantly lower financial costs of the user related to boiler replacement.

ALTERECO is also a producer of wood chips and one of the largest suppliers of this type of fuel in the region. Therefore, for the convenience of our customers, we provide comprehensive services, both producing modern boilers and delivering fuel to them.

In our boiler, we have used an automatic biomass feeding system, which is able to protect its supply for up to 48 hours without the need to refill the fuel tank.

An additional advantage is the method of packing the chips in 14 kg bags, which significantly simplifies and facilitates loading the container.

The bags of chips are placed on pallets of standard dimensions and secured with stretch foil, thanks to this solution, transport is convenient, safe and, above all, clean.

One pallet contains 2m3 of wood chips, which in kilograms gives us about 500 kg, depending on the parameters of a given fuel, i.e. material density and water content. Remember! Wood chips not equal to wood chips!

The wood chips offered by Altereco are always the highest-quality fuel, thanks to careful selection under the supervision of an expert

How do you recognize a bad quality wood chip?

-Rough surface or edges

-High proportion of leaves, bark, needles and small twigs

-Contamination with soil or other substances

-Large difference in particle size

-High proportion of fine fraction and high water content

Wood chips- BIOFUEL

Wood chips- BIOFUEL

Wood chips, what is it?

The raw material for the production of wood chips comes from 100 percent natural forest and plantation wood. This raw material is in the form of trunks or branches. The chips are produced using high speed cutting tools as defined in EN ISO 17225-4. The basic fuel recommended by us as a boiler manufacturer is B1 class wood chips with the following parameters defined by symbols P31S or P45S, it is the only fuel that guarantees trouble-free operation of our boilers and an important element of the warranty obligation. Failure to comply with the following guidelines in terms of basic parameters may be the basis for not accepting the complaint.

Burning biomass

Burning biomass is considered to be more environmentally friendly than burning fossil fuels, because the content of harmful elements (mainly sulfur) in biomass is lower than in average coal.

Biomass sources

The sources of biomass are also relatively homogeneously spatially distributed, which potentially reduces the need for transportation in relation to fossil fuels.

Quality properties of woodchips

1Quality properties of wood chips

■ low, uniform water content, no clumps of moisture or mold
■ small share of needles, leaves, small twigs and bark
■ small share of fine wood fraction (very few particles <3 mm)
■ no contamination with soil or other substances and foreign bodies
■ uniformly shaped particles (without too long particles)
■ Smooth, jagged edges

2Poor quality wood chips:

■ jagged surface or edges
■ high proportion of needles, leaves, small twigs and bark
■ contamination with soil or other substances and foreign bodies
■ different particle sizes
■ high proportion of fine fraction and water content

3Calorific value of wood-based biomass as a function of water content.

The energy of wood is determined by the calorific value (Hu). The calorific value is the energy obtained by burning one kilogram of wet wood. The water contained in the exhaust gas turns into vapor. The calorific value (Ho) additionally contains the value of the condensation heat of water vapor, which is generated by cooling down to the starting temperature level. The amount of water contained in the fuel batch is the basic quantity influencing combustion. It determines the energy and thus the potential energy yield during combustion. The calorific value of wood-based fuel is in practice from 5.0 kWh / kg (18 MJ / kg) with a water content of 5% to 1.5 kWh / kg (5.4 MJ / kg) with a water content of 60%. This value depends on the type of wood and, to a large extent, on the water content or moisture content of the wood. The water content has a decisive influence on the part load control and the emission performance of the installation.

4Determination of the water content.

The water content is determined based on the drying process in the dryer, which is also based on the CEN standard. The fuel test is performed with the use of damp wood, the material is dried for several hours in a drying cabinet at a temperature of about 105 ° C, and then analyzed again. The amount of water contained in the fuel is expressed as water content (w).

5The range of fuel application depends on the water content

The boiler can burn wood-based biomass with a water content of 5 to 30%.

For combustion in the ALTERECO ECO-QUENTIN boiler, use wood chips with a thick fraction of max. ≤ 6% (> 45 mm), with a cross-section of 4 cm2 and a maximum length of 15 cm (P31S). The water content of the wood chips may be max. 30%.
